INDIANAPOLIS --Left-hander Corey Hamman allowed just one run over 6.1 innings and Indianapolis used a two-run sixth to post a 3-1 win over Charlotte in front of 8,318 Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field.

The Indians improve to 49-56 overall and 26-28 at home, while the Knights fall to 49-56 on the season and 23-32 on the road. The Tribe has now taken two of the first three games against Charlotte this season.

Hamman (6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 1 SO) needed just 83 pitches to reach six innings for the fourth time in five starts with the Indians this season. The 28-year-old hurler also improved to 1-1 at the Triple-A level in 2008.

Indianapolis RHP Evan Meek (2.2 IP, 1 H, 4 SO) worked 2.2 scoreless innings to notch his first save of the season. The 25-year-old now owns an 0.47 ERA over his last nine relief appearances (1 ER in 19 IP) and has not allowed an earned run since June 28.

Charlotte LHP Wes Whisler (5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO), a Noblesville High School graduate and Indiana's Mr. Baseball in 2001, went five strong innings but did not figure in the decision.

The Tribe used a two-run sixth to break up the early pitchers' duel.

1B Ryan Mulhern was hit by pitch, moved to third on a double by SS Brian Bixler, and trotted home on a single by 2B Luis Ordaz. The Indians then added an insurance run when back-to-back walks by LF Nyjer Morgan and CF Andrew McCutchen forced home Bixler.

Indianapolis grabbed an early lead when 3B Neil Walker doubled in Morgan, who led off the game with a single. Charlotte quickly answered when 2B Danny Richar's single plated LF Nicholas Blasi in the third.

Walker (2-for-4, 1 RBI), Bixler (2-for-3, 1 R) and Ordaz (2-for-4, 1 RBI) all turned in multi-hit efforts for the Tribe, while no Knights batter recorded more than one base knock.

Charlotte RHP Adam Russell (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) took the loss, falling to 3-1 on the season.

The teams finish up their four-game series on Thursday at 7 p.m. RHP Charlie Haeger is scheduled to start for Charlotte, while RHP Jimmy Barthmaier is expected to get the nod for Indianapolis.

The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.

Thursday will be Ticketmaster Family Night where fans can get four box seats, four hot dogs, four sodas, and four Indians Hats for only $52. Visit or call any Ticketmaster outlet for this special offer. This offer not valid at the Victory Field Box Office.
