St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (January 17, 2011) - Hamline University graduate Kyle Foster will continue to pitch in front of friends and family as he returns to the St. Paul Saints for his fifth season. The Saints also re-signed infielder Steve Mays.
The 25-year-old Foster was a valuable asset to the Saints this season starting in the bullpen, but impressing as a starter when the club needed him to step into the rotation. He was 2-7 with a 4.71 ERA and one save in 30 games (nine starts). In 86.0 innings he walked 27 and struck out 76 while opponents hit .323 against him.
Prior to the 2010 season Foster had started just one game, but in his first start of last season he went 6.0 shutout innings allowing three hits while walking one and striking out six. He went at least 6.0 innings in five of his nine starts and at least 5.0 innings in all, but one start. On July 14 he hurled 7.0 innings allowing two unearned run on seven hits while walking one and striking out a career eight, a feat he would match twice more in the season.
As solid as his 2010 campaign was, nothing will ever compare to his record setting 2008 season in which he didn't allow an earned run in 22.2 innings pitched over 13 games. His .185 opponent's batting average along with the impressive ERA put Major League Organizations on notice and he wound up signing with the Boston Red Sox organization on June 14 and was assigned to Single-A Greenville.
Foster was a four year standout with Hamline and during his senior season in 2007 was named to the All-MIAC First Team going 7-5 with a 3.25 ERA in 15 games (11 starts). He tossed five complete games with two shutouts and in 69.1 innings walked just 19 while striking out 65. Foster was signed by the Saints on July 31 of that year.
The 24-year-old Mays will play his third season with the Saints. The infielder hit .219 last season with one homer, hitting his first professional dinger on May 26 at Sioux City, and 20 RBI in 85 games. He played a solid shortstop committing just 11 errors in 83 games at one of the most difficult positions on the field.
Foster and Mays are the fifth and sixth players signed by the Saints in the off-season. The Saints can carry a maximum of 23 players on their roster during the first 10 days of the season and then must be down to the league maximum of 22 players after that.
