Toledo Spitfire News Release
The Toledo Spitfire, a 2003 National Women's Football Association expansion team, has officially announced its coaching staff. Team owner, Sarah Dowd, has brought together a group of coaches with extensive credentials in women's tackle football.
"We are very proud to follow in the footsteps of some of the most awesome women's football teams in American history, dating back as far as the 1930's. Toledo earned its reputation for quality women's football with The Toledo Troopers, 1971 through 1979 and The Toledo Furies, 1983 through 1989. The Toledo Troopers are the only women's football team inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio with a record of 63-3. The Toledo Furies claimed the title of World Champions in 1984, and runner up in 1985, 1986, and 1987. The Toledo Troopers and The Toledo Furies were both affiliates of the National Women's Football League. We couldn't be happier to have this stellar group of coaches work with our team, " states Dowd.
Mitchi Collette has been appointed Co-Head Coach. Collette played for the Toledo Troopers & Furies. Co-Head Coach Pam Whetstone also played in the NWFL for the Furies. Dorothy Parma played for the Furies and will coach Toledo's running backs. Spitfire Offensive Coordinator Jerome Davis coached the Troopers and Furies. Gloria Jimenez played for the Furies and will help coach the Spitfire defense. The Spitfire quarterbacks coach is Sue Neusmeyer, who played QB for Furies. Waldemar Sharpe has been appointed defensive back coach. He played defensive back and wide receiver for Purdue University from 1987 -1990. Bill Love has played and coached football for many years and is the Spitfire's Defensive Coordinator.
The Spitfire begins the 2003 season on April 12th against the Indiana Thunder. Toledo is a member of the Great Lakes division and will play its home games at Rossford Stadium. All games begin at 7:05 pm.
