Toledo Spitfire News Release
The Toledo Spitfire fell to 3-3 in their home season finale Saturday night due to a lackluster performance against the visiting Cleveland Fusion. Toledo seemed to lose their focus throughout the game, gaining only 75 yds offense. Part of that may be due to the fact that the Spitfire has lost starting QB Casey Stinson for the season due to injury. Stinson, whose arm and ability to scramble and run the ball was key to previous Toledo victories, was sorely missed. Backup QB Heather Hebert (who also played defense and recorded 4 solo tackles) did a good job at QB under the circumstances. Hebert managed to complete 9 of 23 pass attempts for 70 yds with 3 interceptions. April Gladieux received 5 of those passes for 57 yds. However, Cleveland's D-line was clearly hungry for a victory and took advantage of the Spitfire's new offense. The Fusion's play was not as disciplined as the Spitfire, however, incurring 12 penalties for 89 yds to Toledo's 4/20. Unfortunately, the Spitfire were unable to capitalize on the yardage. Thus, the defense was on the field throughout most of the game. Defensive stat leaders were Jessi Torda with 13 solo tackles, Amanda Thames with 13 solo and 3 assists, and Joy Youster with 8 solo, 3 assists and 1 sack. Toledo heads to Southwest Michigan next weekend to take on the Jaguars. The two teams met earlier in the season, with the Jags humbling the Spitfire, 66-6.
