Toledo Spitfire News Release
The 2004 NWFA regular season might be over, but that is where everything starts for the Toledo Spitfire football club. While failing to make the playoffs, the Spitfire is a team that is committed to improving both on and off of the field.
As Head Coach Jerry Davis states: "We're always recruiting. It is a year-round job, trying to find talent in a very limited pool of players to pick from." While Toledo struggled to a 3-5 record this year, the team did show marked improvements in different aspects of the game. However, injuries plagued the team and they never recovered when QB Casey Stinson went down with an injury to her throwing hand that sidelined her for the season. Other two-way players like Shawn Buell, and Leah Hawkins also suffered season-ending injuries which especially decimated Toledo's offense. While disappointed with the record, Coach Davis and company have an optimistic outlook for the 2005 campaign. "We've got a great core group of players that we can build around for next year. I'm looking forward to it" Davis said.
Part of the recuitment process is to be involved in the community and keep the team visible during the off-season. The Spitfire work very hard to keep the name visible around the Northwest Ohio area. The numerous charity events that the Spits take part in, with the players themselves or with Scorchy the mascot, are a testament to this.
To close out the 2004 season, the Spitfire will be airing a 30-minute highlight TV show. It will air in early July in the Toledo area on the Buckeye Cablesystem Sports Network (BCSN).
