Hall-of-famer Jim Palmer to appear at PGE Park June 15

June 7, 2006 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Hall-of-fame pitcher Jim Palmer will make a special appearance at PGE Park when the Portland Beavers play host to the Tucson Sidewinders Thursday, June 15.

Palmer, the only pitcher to earn a World Series victory in three different decades, will be at PGE Park as part of "Strike Out High Cholesterol," a national cholesterol education campaign, courtesy of Merck/Schering-Plough and Men's Health Network. Palmer, who was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990, will sign autographs for the first 200 fans before the start of the game, throw out the ceremonial first pitch and join play-by-play broadcaster Rich Burk on the game's radio broadcast on KKAD AM-1550.

A three-time American League Cy Young Award winner, Palmer was 268-152 with a 2.86 ERA over 19 major league seasons, all spent with the Orioles. The right-hander won 20 or more games eight different seasons and appeared in six World Series; he was part of three World Championship teams with Baltimore.

Since retiring from the game in 1984, Palmer, a six-time all-star who won four Gold Gloves, has spent his post-playing career as a TV commentator, celebrity spokesperson and author. This year, Palmer marks his 43rd season with the Orioles, currently serving as an analyst on Orioles' television broadcasts.

Through his involvement with the National Cholesterol Education Tour, Palmer has helped raise awareness about the dangers of high cholesterol. Despite leading a healthy lifestyle as an athlete, Palmer struggled with high LDL, or "bad" cholesterol levels and is passionate about helping others understand the role of food and family in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels.

Portland is the sixth stop on the National Cholesterol Education Tour.

Tickets for the June 15 game, which begins at 7:05 p.m., are available at the PGE Park box office, area Ticketmaster outlets, on-line at www.ticketmaster.com, or by phone at (503) 224-4400. Discounted group tickets are available by calling the Beavers at (503) 553-5555. Gates open at 6 p.m.

"Strike Out High Cholesterol," a program to lower LDL levels, is a national educational campaign designed to raise awareness about high cholesterol and its two sources: food and family.
