
Barden's walk-off single in tenth seals Tucson sweep of Portland, 6-5

Tucson, AZ - The Sidewinders completed a four-game sweep of the Portland Beavers with a 6-5 victory in 10 innings last night. After the bullpen blew a 4-1 lead, the Sidewinders managed to edge the Beavers on a 3B Brian Barden bases-loaded single in the bottom of the tenth.
Portland led the game off with three straight singles, but Tucson starter, LHP Bill Murphy, managed to work out of the jam with a strikeout, a pop foul that he fielded himself and a bloop fly to left.
The Sidewinders struck first in the scoring category with two in the second. 3B Brian Barden walked and RF Matt Erickson was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. C Juan Brito smashed a double down the line in left to score both runners and give Tucson a 2-0 lead.
Portland starter RHP Cesar Carrillo made his Triple-A debut, but only lasted 2 2/3 innings. He allowed two earned runs on two hits and three walks. He struck out one batter.
The Beavers scored a run in the fourth when 1B Jon Knott led off with a double. He came home on a LF Jack Cust single to center to make the score 2-1.
In the Tucson half of the fourth, Barden led off with his second walk of the game. He moved to third on an Erickson single and scored on a Brito single to center, giving the Sidewinders a 3-1 lead.
The Sidewinders added a run in the fifth when LF Scott Hairston singled and advanced on a throwing error to second. 1B Chris Carter singled to right to score Hairston and give Tucson a 4-1 lead.
Portland came within one in the top of the sixth off the strength of a SS Manny Alexander two-run blast to left that scored Cust. The Beavers then tied the game and took the lead in the seventh. 2B Bobby Hill walked and moved to second on a sac bunt from RF Terrmel Sledge. CF Ben Johnson doubled to right-center to tie the game at 4-4. Cust singled to plate Johnson and give Portland a 5-4 lead.
The Sidewinders knotted the game back up at 5-5 in the eighth when Hairston led the inning off with a homer to left. The score stayed that way past the ninth.
Young led the Tucson half of the tenth off with a double to deep right. He moved to third on a Drew ground out. Hairston and Carter walked to load the bases for Barden, who singled deep to center to win the game, 6-5.
RHP Greg Aquino got the victory after working two scoreless innings. He allowed only one hit and struck out two batters. RHP Aquilino Lopez got the loss, working 1/3 of an inning and allowing the winning run on two hits and two walks. Tucson starter, Murphy, went five innings and allowed only one run on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts, but did not figure in the decision.
The Sidewinders have an off day tomorrow, but resume their homestand on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. against the Salt Lake Bees.
