HICKORY, NC - LF Jeremy Williams hit a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth, but the Hickory Crawdads came up just short against the Hagerstown Suns, 8-6, before 1,949 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Wednesday afternoon .

The Suns (21-15) took an early lead in the top of the first against RHP Luke Jackson (L, 2-4). With two down, DH Jason Martinson and 3B Matthew Skole extended the frame with consecutive singles. RF Steven Souza then drove in Martinson with an RBI single, making it 1-0.

The 'Dads (19-17) came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning against RHP Nathan Karns (W, 1-0). With one away, 2B Rougned Odor singled himself on and quickly stole second base. SS Hanser Alberto followed with a base hit, moving Odor to third. After Alberto swiped second base, Williams drove in the first of his three RBIs on the day with a grounder to second, plating Odor to tie the game. 3B Drew Robinson then lifted Hickory in front, 2-1, with an RBI single, bringing in Alberto.

Hagerstown responded with a four-run frame in the top of the second inning. Three straight walks to start the inning loaded the bases with no outs. CF Billy Burns drove in the inning's first run with an RBI fielder's choice that tied it at 2-2 and left runners at the corners. Martinson reloaded the bases with a walk, and then Skole worked an RBI walk to put the Suns back in front. An RBI single by Souza stretched the lead, before a balk called on Jackson with the bases loaded scored the stanza's fourth run, putting the Suns ahead, 5-2.

After a 1B Brett Newsome solo home run made it a 6-2 lead for the Suns in the third, the 'Dads came racing back against the Hagerstown bullpen in the bottom of the seventh. DH Jordan Akins and 1B Jhonny Gomez drew back-to-back walks to put two runners on. CF Chris Grayson drove in Akins with an RBI single to right field, before Alberto struck with an RBI base hit one out later. Williams followed with an RBI base hit of his own, bringing the 'Dads within one run of tying it, 6-5.

However, Souza struck with two more RBIs late in the game to pad the Suns lead. He led off the eighth with a solo shot, before driving in Martinson with an RBI fielder's choice in the ninth, stretching the Hagerstown lead to 8-5.

The Crawdads attempted one last rally in the bottom of the ninth against RHP Aaron Barrett. With two outs and no one on, Williams struck again with a solo blast over the left-field wall. Robinson kept the game alive with a single and RF Zach Cone reached on an error, putting the two potential game-tying runs on at first and second. However, Barrett won the battle against C Kellin Deglan, dealing a game-ending strikeout to close the 8-6 win for Hagerstown.
