The Gwinnett Braves beat the Durham Bulls 7-6 on Thursday night at Durham Athletic Park in Durham, NC. The G-Braves. Gwinnett, who has been eliminated from both the International League South Division title as well as the IL Wild Card, improves to 70-69. Durham, which has already clinched the IL South, falls to 86-53.
It Was Over When: G-Braves DH and newly promoted Orlando Mercado didn't get a hit, but his 8th inning sacrifice fly was the difference in breaking a 6-6 tie.
Braves Beat: On the Mound: Starting RHP Todd Redmond once again couldn't notch his would-be, record-setting 10th season win for Gwinnett, going 4.2 IP while yielding 6 R/ER on 6 hits. He also walked 4 and struck out that same amount. RHP Cristhian Martinez (5-1), recently optioned from the Atlanta bullpen, went 2.1 IP without allowing a run and striking out 4 batters to earn the win. Closer Craig Kimbrel worked a scoreless 9th inning for his 23rd save. At the plate: Third baseman Dan Nelson, called up from Mississippi (AA) earlier today and making his first Triple-A start ever, homered and finished 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. Right fielder Brent Clevlen also went deep, ending up 1-for-3 with a HR (3) and 2 RBI (26). Left fielder Matt Young went 2-for-4 with an RBI (34) and 2 steals to increase the best number for a Gwinnett base-stealer in the team's two year history to 38 stolen bases.
The opposition: On the Mound: Durham starting pitcher Aneury Rodriguez went 5.2 IP and allowed 5 R/ER on 5 hits. He also yielded a pair of homers and 2 walks, striking out 5 in his no decision. R.J. Swindle (2-4) was charged with 1 R/ER in 1.0 IP in getting hung with the loss in relief. At the plate: DH Chris Richard was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI, while second baseman J.J. Furmaniak wrapped up 2-for-5 with an RBI.
On Deck: Gwinnett continues its final trip of the season, wrapping up its short two game series with Durham at 7:05 p.m. on Friday. The G-Braves will send RHP Brandon Beachy (2-0, 2.50 ERA) to the mound against RHP Richard De Los Santos (14-5, 3.36 ERA) for the Tides. The game will be broadcast on the radio at WDUN-550 AM.
