Danville Otterbots News Release
The Gwinnett Braves clubbed the Rochester Red Wings 13-6 on Thursday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. The squad exploded on offense, setting a season high for most runs scored in a game as they poured it on the Wings. The G-Braves (49-56) remain 16.0 games behind International League South leaders Durham in last place, and 6.5 games of Wild Card-leaders Louisville. Rochester (39-68), also in the bottom of their division, are 22.0 games behind IL North leaders Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
It Was Over When: G-Braves DH Barbaro Canizares extended his consecutive RBI streak to 3 games with this his second straight multi-RBI contest, clearing the bases with a 3 RBI double in a 5 run 6th inning for the home team.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Starting LHP Jose Ortegano couldn't snap his franchise-high 8-game losing skid, but he did allow less than 6 ER for just the second time in 5 starts. His night ended after 4.1 IP, allowing just 1 hit, 3 R/ER and 2 walks while striking out 5 batters. RHP Cristhian Martinez (4-1), whose last 2 appearances were as the starting pitcher, earned the win in his second straight appearance. LHP Lee Hyde went just 0.1 IP, allowing 3 R/ER before being removed from the game after a line drive deflected off his left hand. The injury was not serious.
At the plate: Canizares (3-for-5), catcher J.C Boscan (2-for-4 with a HR) and first baseman Freddie Freeman (2-for-3) had 3 RBI apiece, leading the way for an offense that saw 7 of the 9 hitters in the lineup record multi-hit games. Gwinnett set a season high for hits with 6 in the 7th inning, with all three RBI leaders in the game getting a hit in that frame. New OF Nate McLouth, activated prior to the game, went 2-for-5 with a leadoff homer.
The opposition:
On the Mound: Rochester RHP David Bromberg went 5.0 IP, also allowing 3 R/ER with 1 walk and 4 K's. RHP Brad Hennessey (1-3) went 0.1 IP in relief of him, allowing 3 R/ER and getting the loss.
At the plate: DH Jacque Jones went 2-for-3 with 4 RBI to lead the Red Wings.
On Deck: Gwinnett continues their season long 12-day, 12-game homestand tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m., completing the final contest of a four game series against Rochester. The G-Braves will send 2009 1st round pick Mike Minor (3-1, 2.55 ERA) to the hill for his fifth start at the Triple-A level. He'll go against RHP Anthony Swarzak (2-8, 6.22 ERA) for the Red Wings. The game will be broadcast on the radio at WDUN-550 AM.
