Greeneville Astros News Release
GREENEVILLE, TN - The Bristol Sox held the lead on the Greeneville Astros for the majority of the game on Thursday night, but Carlos Mojica came through with a walk off hit for the Astros, when it mattered most, in the bottom of the ninth.
Bristol took the initial lead of the game right off the bat with a RBI double by Drew Lee in the top of the first inning. The hit was his sixteenth double on the season.
The very next inning, the Sox stretched their lead to 3-0 on a two-run homer to left field from Bradley Salgado.
The Astros finally picked up their first hit in the fifth inning, but didn't score a run until the bottom of the seventh.
Marcus Nidiffer led off that inning with a base hit. Then, two batters later, Bubby Williams doubled on a fly ball to left field to score Nidiffer. Emilio King immediately followed with a single on a ground ball to left field to bring Williams in and cut the Sox lead to 3-2.
Unable to get anything going in the eighth inning, the Astros headed into the bottom of the ninth trailing by a single run.
Bubby Williams was back at the plate to lead off the inning. After hitting a ground ball to third, he was fortunate to reach first safely after an errant throw went over the head of Sox first baseman Daniel Black.
Emilio King moved Williams over to second on a sacrifice bunt. Then, Jonathan Merritt got hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. With Ricardo Heredia batting, a wild pitch advanced both runners.
Heredia put the ball in play with a ground out to second that scored Williams, the tying run, and advanced Merritt, the winning run, over to third.
Finally, Carlos Mojica entered the game as a pinch hitter with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and the game tied at 3-3. When the Astros needed it the most, he connected with a walk off base hit that sailed just over the outstretched glove of Daniel Black at first base and into right field as Merritt came home for the winning run.
Jeiler Castillo (2-1), who now has an ERA of 2.52 on the season, pitched 2/3 of an inning and picked up the win for Greeneville.
The Astros face the Bristol Sox again on Friday night at 7:00pm. A spectacular Friday Night Fireworks show, presented by Ace Hardware, will immediately follow the game. For more information on the Astros or a complete schedule, visit www.greenevilleastros.com or call (423) 638-0411.
