Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
SUDBURY, ON - The Majors dug themselves an early hole, battled back, watched their lead evaporate in the dying seconds, then fell in a shootout in Sudbury this evening. With the loss, the Majors record shifts to 31-23-6-4 on the year.
Kevin Baker connected for the Wolves, on the power-play, 1:41 into the game. The assists were credited to Akim Aliu and Nick Tuzzolino. Then, Benoit Pouliot made it 2-0 for the home squad less than a minute later when he scored off of a Nick Foligno pass.
The Majors stormed back in the 2nd period, despite continuing to come up short on the power-play stick. St. Mike's got goals in the middle frame at 10:51, 16:22 and 17:30 (shorthanded) from Matt Halischuk, Justin Donati and Micheal Haley, respectively. The helpers were credited to Justin DiBenedetto, Adam Zamec, Ryan Wilson and Scott Lehman.
The Majors made it 4-2 only 1:02 into the 3rd period when Matt Caria deflected a Wilson slap shot, on the power-play. The other assist was grabbed by Lehman. Aliu got the Wolves to within a goal when he connected on the power-play at 13:50 off of Pouliot and Jonathan D'Aversa passes. Then, Sudbury tied it up with 1:11 remaining when Devin Didiomete stuffed home a rebound chance. The assists were credited to Foligno and D'Aversa. At the end of regulation, the Majors had been granted 4 power-plays to Sudbury's 12 with a shot differential of 50-26 in favour of the home squad.
The Majors were granted a power-play in overtime but couldn't produce the game-winner. The closest they came was Donati's partial breakaway shot that rang off the post with 3 seconds remaining. Wayne Savage was sensational for the Majors in turning aside 50 shots on the night. Kevin Beech responded with 25 stops for the Wolves. The game's three stars were Savage (1st), Pouliot (2nd) and Aliu (3rd).
The Majors return home to entertain the Kingston Frontenacs on Sunday afternoon (March 12th) at 2:00 pm. This game will be broadcast on Rogers television in the Toronto region, channel 10 or 63, and webcast at www.stmichaelsmajors.com.
