Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - Due to the imminent threat of Hurricane Gustav, the Mobile BayBears have decided to cancel their final two games of the 2008 season, scheduled for Sunday and Monday against the Birmingham Barons, to allow the players and coaches for both teams the proper amount of time to evacuate the area.
With the safety of the teams and their families on his mind, BayBears general manager Travis Toth felt that this was the right time to make the decision.
"We want to present them the opportunity to make arrangements to get home," Toth said. "The Mobile BayBears' number one priority is the safety of the coaches, players and our staff!"
The same thoughts were in mind when the 2004 Southern League Championship Series was cancelled when the BayBears were set to play the Tennessee Smokies because of Hurricane Ivan.
With the threat of airport closings and evacuations due to the impending hurricane, everyone now has ample opportunity to clear the area and get home safely.
