Eddy Rodriguez delivered the tie-breaking home run and Travis Wood worked six effective innings in Chattanooga's 5-2 victory Saturday night in the middle of the last regular season five-game set at AT&T Field. The Lookouts improved to 29-38 in the second half and 66-71 overall, while the Starss dipped to 31-37 in the half and 72-66 overall. The Stars lead the season series 13-10 and have won seven of 13 in Chattanooga.
Michael Garciaparra's home run off the scoreboard in left field with two outs in the first inning opened the scoring. It was his second of the series and third of the year with all three coming in Chattanooga. The Lookouts tied the game in the home fourth when Justin Turner scored from second base on a force play at second base, as Drew Anderson beat the throw back to first base to keep the inning alive.
Stars' starter Mike Jones walked Eric Eymann to begin the fifth before Rodriguez belted a 2-1 offering over the wall in right field for his second home run with the Lookouts to make it a 3-1 game. Jones had allowed only 12 home runs in his entire career before rejoining the Stars on May 19 and has given up 11 since. Jones allowed three hits, walked three and fanned three in taking the loss to finish the season at 1-6.
Wood held the Stars to only an Ozzie Chavez single over his last five frames and picked up the win to end the season at 4-9. He walked two and struck out two to beat the Stars for the first time in four tries after a suffering a loss in each of his prior three starts against them. Robert Manuel retired the first six hitters he faced before Guilder Rodriguez led off the ninth inning with a single and scored on Mike Bell fielder's choice grounder. Manuel struck out a pair and earned his third save of the season.
The series continues Sunday evening with left-hander Brae Wright taking the hill for the Stars against Lookouts' right-hander Sam LeCure. Coverage begins at 5:00 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com.
