MOBILE, Ala. - With the last two games of the 2008 season canceled because of the threat from Hurricane Gustav, the BayBears wrapped up their season on Saturday with a 6-4 loss to the Birmingham Barons at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Javier Castillo's first-inning solo home run put the Barons (74-63, 34-33) on top against Cesar Valdez (3-5). League ERA leader Justin Cassel quickly gave up a run in the bottom of the first as Rusty Ryal knocked in Guillermo Reyes with a sac fly.

Birmingham pulled away with four runs in the fourth. The first three men reached on singles, and Stefan Gartrell was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Freddie Thon smacked an RBI single to make it 3-1 while Robbie Hudson and Jared Price each drove home runs with fielder's choices.

The Barons sneaked another run in the fifth on a balk by Matt Green, but the BayBears (58-79, 29-38) tallied three times to make a game of it in the fifth as Chris Rahl scored on a wild pitch while Gerardo Parra and Bryan Byrne picked up run-scoring hits, but both teams were kept off the scoreboard the rest of the night.

The BayBears will open the 2009 season against the Carolina Mudcats on April 14. Call (251) 479-BEAR for tickets or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
