SAN ANTONIO, TX - In their first game in San Antonio this season the Sharks took on the San Antonio Gunslingers at the Freeman Coliseum. Very fitting to the theme, the game quickly turned into an offensive shootout as the Gunslingers and Sharks both scored on their opening drives as Gunslingers quarterback Robert Kent threw a touchdown on the second play of the game to receiver Brian Robinson. While Jacksonville matched with a striking touchdown pass on the second play of their opening drive with WR/DB Kamrin Solomon. Tied at 7-7, San Antonio remained hot as quarterback Robert Kent fired his second touchdown this time to WR/DB/KR Kali Rashaad but after a missed extra point San Antonio kicker Drew Pearson redeemed himself with a deuce putting the Gunslingers up 15-7. Jacksonville looked ready to keep up the pace but an interception caught by Gunslingers DB Thorton Chandler slowed down the Sharks but did not stop them as Jacksonville's defense came up big with a forced fumble by defensive back Markus Smith led to a fumble recovery by WR/LB Devin Wilson giving the Sharks the ball back. Quarterback Arvell Nelson capitalized as he tossed a touchdown pass to receiver Milton Williams to push the score to 15-13.
Right before the end of the quarter, the Gunslingers slung a touchdown pass to receiver Phillip Barnett to put San Antonio up 22-13 going into the second quarter. After a Arville Nelson fumble, the Gunslingers gained another touchdown with receiver Phillip Barnett delivering Robert Kent his fourth touchdown pass of the night and extending the lead to 29-13. In need of a score, Sharks quarterback Arville Nelson bounced back by finding receiver Devin Wilson for a score. Kicker Nick Belcher pitched in with his first deuce of the night closing the gap to 28-22. After a stop by the Sharks defense, Jacksonville pushed for a comeback as WR/DB Kamrin Solomon rushed on a sweep to score for Jacksonville, setting the score 29-28 giving the Sharks their first lead of the night.
After halftime, the Sharks received the ball but did not convert a score with a turnover on downs. On a goal-line stand Gunslingers fullback, Rashad Payne fumbled a touchdown attempt but quarterback Robert Kent recovered the ball to give San Antonio the lead back 35-29 and a deuce by kicker Drew Pearson turned the score 37-29. Jacksonville bit back with a touchdown and two-point conversion both caught by WR/DB Kamrin Solomon to tie the game 37-37. Into the fourth, San Antonio scored with a touchdown pass to the back endzone caught by receiver Phillip Barnett. Kicker Drew Pearson knocked down another deuce to put San Antonio up 46-37. Jacksonville responded with a rushing a touchdown with FB/DL Chei Hill to keep the game close at 46-44. However, the shootout in Texas continued as receiver Kali Rashaad caught a touchdown to widen the lead late in the fourth. Wilson amped up the game leaping for a back endzone for a touchdown but the officials ruled the catch out, costing Jacksonville the score, the Sharks would end the drive with a fumble that was recovered & returned by Gunslingers WR/DB Phillip Barnett for a touchdown, to add to the lead San Antonio's kicker Drew Pearson hit his fourth deuce of the night. Down 60-44, Jacksonville had no choice but to score & score fast. WR/DB Kamrin Solomon answered the call scoring his third touchdown of the night and caught a leaping two-point conversion to bring the game within 8 points but it was not enough the Gunslingers came out on top 60-52.
Leaders of tonight including quarterback Arville Nelson who threw 33 completions and 5 touchdowns but did have a costly fumble and one interception.
