April 13, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. â Sylvain Deschatelets scored twice, including an empty netter, to seal a 3-1 San Diego victory over Bakersfield in front of 5,291 fans at Centennial Garden on Saturday night.
Bakersfield took the lead in the first, despite being outshot in the opening frame for the second straight game. Paul Willett netted his first of the post season on the power play at 10:25. Willett's goal tied for the franchise career goal scoring lead with Jamie Cooke. The Gulls came back with a power play goal of their own to tie the game at 1-1. Deschatelets scored his first of the night with 13 seconds left on a two-man advantage.
In the second period, Cory Cyrenne scored on a breakaway, also on the power play, as San Diego took the lead. It was his first of the post season, coming at 6:27. Just past the 15-minute mark of the second period, tempers flared. After a collision between Bakersfield's David Bell and Gulls goaltender Trevor Koenig, a scrap ensued, and when the dust settled 54 minutes in penalties had been handed out, including 25 minutes to Bell alone. The Gulls had a five-minute power play but failed to score.
The Condors could not tie the game up in the third, failing on two late power plays. Deschatelets banged home his second of the night into the open goal with just 7.7 seconds on the clock, and the Gulls took the win. The series is tied up a one win apiece, heading back to San Diego for Games Three, Four and Five, starting on Tuesday. The Condors next home game is slated to be Game Six on Sunday, April 20th at 6:00pm. It is contingent on results from San Diego, however, as the series is the best-of-seven games.
After tonight's game, the Condors "Go Army" warm up jerseys were auctioned off to raise money for local children's charities. A contribution of $11,375 was made to the Active 20/30 Club, including a team-high $900 for Bell's jersey. In addition to the jerseys, goaltender Kevin St. Pierre put up one of his old masks for bid, and it pulled in $1,300.
In other playoff action, the Fresno Falcons tied their series at one win apiece with a 5-2 victory in Idaho tonight.
