Greensboro Generals News Release
GREENSBORO, NC -- The Greensboro Generals defeated the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies 3-2 in overtime on Saturday night, evening their best-of-five series at one game a piece. Mark Turner didn't take long to decide it, notching the game-winner just 1:13 into the extra session.
All four goals in regulation were scored in the first period. The Bullies took a 1-0 lead on a fluke goal, as Greensboro's defense attempted to clear the puck out of the crease, only to have it bank off a leg directly into the goal.
Greensboro retaliated with a pair of goals less than a minute apart to take the lead. Turner tied the game with a slap shot from the left circle that got through the pads of Atlantic City netminder Matt Yeats with 2:31 left in the frame. Jay Murphy then connected from nearly the same place 58 seconds later. The Generals couldn't take the lead into the locker room, however, with J. F. Caudron tying the game with only 15 seconds left in the period.
From there, it became a goaltender's battle, but Greensboro's Daniel Berthiaume was the much busier man. Berthiaume denied 37 of 39 shots on the night, giving the Generals the chance to win the game in overtime. Turner did just that with his second goal of the night, taking a pass from Mike Bayrack on the left side, streaking past their defense and firing a wrist shot from close range through the pads of Yeats.
With the victory, the Generals are now assured of two home games in this series, giving them the chance to clinch this series with two home victories and advance to the Northern Conference Finals. Game 3 will be at the Greensboro Coliseum on Wednesday night at 7:00, with Game 4 set for Friday night at 7:30. Should a Game 5 be necessary, the two clubs will head back to Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City next Saturday night at 7:35. All games can be heard on AM-950 WPET and www.greensborogenerals.com..
