San Diego Gulls News Release
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The San Diego Gulls began the 2002-03 season with three straight wins, before the Idaho Steelheads brought the Blue and Orange back down to Earth.
After shutting out the Gulls on Tuesday, 2-0, the Steelheads came back the next night to hand San Diego a 3-2 shootout loss. The game was a close-knit affair, with each team racking up 19 shots, but San Diego ran itself out of the game taking too many penalties. The Steelheads only went 1 for 10 on the power play, and failed to score with a two-man advantage for almost four minutes, but it cost the Blue and Orange valuable attack time. The Gulls did have eight power plays of their own, but a stingy Idaho defense kept the game tied heading into the shootout. And in the extra period, Idaho tallied three times to San Diego's one.
Saturday night the Gulls face off against the Long Beach Ice Dogs for their third meeting of the year. San Diego swept a weekend series from its Southern California rival on Oct. 12 and Oct. 13. Saturday night will be Long Beach's Home Opener.
The Blue and Orange thrashed the Ice Dogs 6-0 on Opening Night, highlighted by the three-point performances from R.J. Enga and Dean Tiltgen. Trevor Koenig picked up his 10th career WCHL shutout, tying him for first all-time. The next night, the Gulls got their second straight win, 5-4, thanks to the natural hat trick by defenseman Mike Garrow in the first period. San Diego actually jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Long Beach started a comeback.
Though the Gulls are 2-0 against the Ice Dogs this season and 14-9-1 lifetime, San Diego has had its trouble with Long Beach over the last year, especially at the Long Beach Arena. Last season, the Ice Dogs had a stretch of six straight wins over the Gulls, and were 5-2 at home.
Long Beach hasn't played since its 5-4 setback to the Gulls on Oct. 13, a 13-day layoff.
The Gulls return home Sunday against the Bakersfield Condors at 5 p.m. After a brief stop in Fresno Tuesday night, they'll be back in San Diego to host Idaho on Friday, Nov. 1. All games can be heard live on 1130AM-KSDO and at www.ksdo.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show broadcasts live every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on wsradio.com with Tera Black and Jeremy Zager hosting.
