Newport Gulls News Release
The Newport Gulls will host the Sanford Mainers in Game One of the 2013 NECBL Quarterfinal Playoffs (Eastern Division Semifinals) at Cardines Field on Sunday, August 4th at 6:35 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m. for the best-of-three-game series, which will travel to Sanford, Maine and Goodall Park for Game Two on Monday, August 5th at 6:30 p.m. and return to Cardines Field in Newport, if needed, on Tuesday, August 6th at 6:35 p.m.
The Newport Gulls will send right-hander Brett Graves (4-0, 1.01 ERA) to the mound for Game One. Graves, who picked up all four of his wins at home, was an NECBL All-Star, making 6 starts, striking out 30 batters and allowing just four earned runs in 35 2/3 innings pitched. The University of Missouri product is in his second summer with the Gulls. The Mainers have listed University of Michigan RHP James Bourque (0-3, 2.92 ERA in 9 games, 7 starts) as their probable starter. Neither starting pitcher has faced the other team in 2013.
The Gulls will send Washington State University righty Sean Hartnett (3-1, 1.82 ERA in 11 games, 3 starts) to the mound in Game Two in Sanford. The Gulls finished the regular season 3-2 vs. the Sanford Mainers, splitting a double header at Goodall Park and winning both contests at Cardines Field. The winner of the series will go on to play the winner of the Ocean State Waves and Mystic Schooners series on Wednesday in the NECBL Eastern Division Championship Series, another best-of-three series.
