NECBL Makes $3,000 Donation to Sandy Hook Victims

Published on August 3, 2013 under New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release

On behalf of commissioner Sean McGrath of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, Danbury Westerner President Paul Schaffer and Deputy Commissioner Gregg Hunt presented a check for $3,045.85 today to the Newtown, CT Youth and Family Services. The amount represents donations from each of The New England League's 13 teams, as throughout the 2013 season the NECBL raised funds and awareness for the Sandy Hook Elementary School victims by selling bracelets and accepting donations.

Sandy Hook Elementary School is located just minutes from Rogers Field, the home of the League's longest tenured ballclub, the Danbury Westerners. The Westerners have had a long and deep involvement with the Newtown community.

"On behalf of the thirteen organizations and communities that comprise the NECBL, it is with a heavy heart that we make this charitable donation to an outstanding civic organization, the Newtown Youth and Family Services," said McGrath. "While the Sandy Hook tragedy shook every parent and student, its horror was magnified because of its proximity to our Westerner family.

"The NECBL believes it has an obligation to be good neighbors and good citizens in the communities where we work and play. If this donation can aid the healing process even a little bit, we're humbled to help. We know that this modest donation to a wonderful organization who has contributed so much to the Newtown community through the years will continue to do during this most challenging time."

"The Danbury Westerners are proud to support Newtown Youth and Family Services for all of the wonderful work they have done and continue to do," added Schaffer. "Their presence in the community in the days and months following the Sandy Hook massacre has been inspirational and helpful in assisting the community as it begins the long road to recovery."

At the NECBL's February 2013 Board meeting, the league voted unanimously to undertake season long fund raising and support efforts for the victims and community of Sandy Hook. All players and coaches have worn a special game hat with a green tribute logo to Sandy Hook throughout this season. The NECBL also purchased rubber wrist bracelets which were distributed to all teams, with 100% of the net proceeds from these bracelet sales awarded to Newtown Youth and Family Services.

Newtown Youth and Family Services is dedicated to helping children and families achieve their highest potential. A leader in providing mental health and support services, this dynamic nonprofit agency combines clinical services and positive youth development programs to provide a continuum of care to residents of the greater Newtown area.

Newtown Youth and Family Services is a licensed, non-profit, mental health clinic and youth service bureau which provides outpatient individual, couple and family counseling and substance abuse treatment services. In addition Newtown Youth and Family Services offers prevention initiatives, after school, evening and weekend programs and support groups to promote individual and community wellness.
