Bakersfield Condors News Release
San Diego, Calif. â Migel Delisle's first career playoff tally snapped a 1-1 tie in the third period and led to a 3-1 victory for the San Diego Gulls over the Bakersfield Condors in front of 4,370 fans at the San Diego Sports Arena on Friday night. The Gulls eliminated the Condors from the playoffs, four games to one.
Bakersfield opened the game strong, pounding netminder Trevor Koenig with 14 first period shots. A shot from an odd angle led to the first goal of the game, however, as J.J. Wrobel put it to the net from low along the left wing boards. The puck deflected past Koenig for the 1-0 lead at 14:47.
The Gulls didn't waste any time in tying up the contest in the second frame. Mark Pederson slipped a shot through netminder Kevin St. Pierre for his third of the playoffs to knot the game at one apiece. Both teams had several opportunities to break the tie, but the goaltenders were equal to the task. Koenig made two great saves on the Condors, stopping Quinn Fair on a one-timer on a Condors power play, and minutes later denied Jamie Cooke on a shorthanded breakaway. The period ended 1-1, with the Condors leading in shots 29-23.
A disallowed Bakersfield goal highlighted the early action of the third period. Jeff Goldie appeared to tuck a backhander underneath Koenig. The netminder had slid back into his cage before the whistle blew, and despite the puck being over the line, the goal was waved off. San Diego then took the lead just over five minutes later, as Miguel Delisle potted his own rebound for a 2-1 advantage. They added an empty net tally in the final minute to put it out of reach, and eliminate the Condors with a 3-1 win.
The Condors finish the season having fallen to their archrivals from San Diego for the sixth time in the last seven years of the franchise. The Gulls will move on to face the winner of the Fresno Falcons and Idaho Steelheads series, which the Falcons lead 2-1.
