San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release

The San Diego Surf Dawgs have come to terms with two of their most important players from the 2005 Championship team, Nick Guerra and Matt Wheatland. The local players showcased their skills in bringing the inaugural 2005 Golden Baseball League championship to San Diego last year, and are vital additions to the 2006 campaign.

In his first year of professional baseball, Nick Guerra left quite a mark on the GBL. Originally from Chula Vista, Guerra, 25, attended San Jose State University before playing with the Dawgs. In his return to native San Diego, Guerra was awarded the GBL Rookie of the Year in 2005. The switch-hitting third baseman hit .290 with 7 HR's and 62 RBI's. He shows unlimited potential, and will be a key figure (second in games played in 2005) if the Surf Dawgs want to compete for the GBL crown in 2006. General Manager Jeffrey Grow said about Guerra, "He had an exceptional rookie season and we expect that his future will only get brighter."

Matt Wheatland's road back home has been a windy one. A standout pitcher out of Rancho Bernardo High School, "Wheat" went in the first round, 8th overall, in the 2000 draft to the MLB's Detroit Tigers. He posted brilliant numbers in his first two campaigns, logging a 1.25 ERA in his first year and logging 46 K's in 46 innings in the following summer leagues. Many innings brought the wear and tear that led to shoulder problems. He joined the Surf Dawgs in 2005, hoping to regain his form. Injuries led to a conversion to first base, where he was steady, logging 67 games in the field. Wheatland hopes to improve to the point where he may regain his star form. "Wheat has worked exceptionally hard this off season and it is a true testament of his desire," said GM Grow.

The Surf Dawgs begin their title defense on June 1st in Yuma, Ariz when they take on the Scorpions. They return home for their home opener on June 5th, for a 7:05 affair, at Tony Gwynn Stadium located at San Diego State University.
