Greenville Grrrowl News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - The Greenville Grrrowl of the ECHL, proud affiliates of the Chicago Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers, have named RYAN STEWART as General Manager. After serving one season as Greenville's Assistant General Manager and Assistant Coach, Stewart was named the second GM in the organization's history, effective immediately.
"Ryan has a great work ethic and has embraced the General Manager responsibilities very quickly," said Ed Rubinstein, President of the Grrrowl. "He has a good rapport with the players and along with coach John Marks will be able to create a strong team on the ice."
The 31-year old native of Niagara Falls, Ontario will fulfil the traditional role of General Manager. Stewart's responsibilities will include assembling the team, negotiating trades and salaries, managing the budget and salary cap, and coordinating team expenditures. A graduate of Canisius College in Buffalo, NY, Stewart will also handle immigration requirements for non-American players, manage the medical and training staff, schedule practice time, secure player housing, and work to promote Center Ice Charities. Stewart will work with Head Coach John Marks to recruit players, analyze team situations, and maintain relationships with Greenville's NHL/AHL affiliates.
Stewart was in a Grrrowl jersey when the puck dropped at the BI-LO Center for the first time on October 16, 1998. He had two points in that game, and went on to play a total of 334 games for the Grrrowl in that #27 jersey, more than any other player in team history. Before joining Greenville, Stewart played four seasons at Canisius College from 1994-1998, where he captained the "Ice Griffs" for two years while earning a bachelors degree in Communications. He was selected as a finalist for the NCAA's Humanitarian Award as a senior, an honor given annually to college hockey's finest citizen. Stewart played his first professional game for the CHL's Tulsa Oilers in March of 1998, and was signed by the Grrrowl the following summer.
His most impressive season came in 2001-02, a year that included an AHL call-up, an ECHL Man of the Year Award, and a Kelly Cup Championship. Stewart played with the AHL's Providence Bruins that season, but his time in Greenville led to a successful run at the ECHL's most coveted trophy. He scored the game-winning and cup-clinching goal in Game 4 of the Kelly Cup finals against the Dayton Bombers. The following season he suited up for the ECHL's Florida Everblades and the BISL's Manchester Storm. He returned to Greenville for the 2003-04 season as the team's captain.
Stewart resides in Simpsonville, SC with his wife Lindsay.
New Full Season Tickets, Flex Packs, and Top Puppy Packages are all available for the 2005-06 season. For information on any of Greenville's Top Dog Memberships, call 864-467-4777, or visit www.grrrowl.com.
