Kalamazoo Growlers News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI - It was a battle at the top in the South Division of the Northwoods League as the second place Kalamazoo Growlers took on first place Madison Mallards. A huge sixth inning propelled the Growlers to a 10-5 victory to capture their 11th straight win. The Growlers lineup notched 13 hits on the night with contributions from everyone in the lineup. Jordan Bowersox went 3-3 at the plate, Cayman Richardson added four RBIs, and Jonathan Foster had two doubles.
The Mallards jumped on Kalamazoo fast, commanding a 4-1 lead through the fifth. But the Growlers found a groove in the sixth starting with a Jonathan Foster double followed by a Sam Faith single. George Mendazona batted in Foster and Jordan Bowersox singled to bring Faith in. After an Ivan Johnson walk, Richardson doubled in two more runs to give the Growlers a 7-4 lead.
After Madison responded with another run in the seventh, the Growlers bats went back to work with three more runs. Bowersox started with a single and Ivan Johnson walked. Both stole a base to advance to second and third. Richardson drove them both in with a single to right field. Two batters later, Foster concluded the scouring with his fourth and final hit of the evening.
Andrew Belcik was the starter for the Growlers and despite allowing ten hits, only gave up four runs in six innings. Tommy Sommer was the first arm out of the bullpen for the Growlers allowing one run in one inning of work. Nikoh Mitchell was the final Kalamazoo pitcher. He went the final two innings giving up one hit and one walk. He struck out three batters, including the final two Mallards to end the game.
The Growlers will look for their 12th-straight win tomorrow at 3:05 PM EST as they face the Mallards again. Sam Weatherly takes the hill for the Growlers with sole possession of first place on the line.
