Grizzlies Lose Middle Game to Slammers

Gateway Grizzlies News Release

Sauget, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies surrendered 11 runs in the top of the seventh inning in a 12-3 loss to the Joliet Slammers on Saturday night at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

The game started as a pitchers' duel through the first four-and-a-half innings, with both Brendan Feldmann (2-3) and Cam Aufderheide (3-2) holding the opposing team scoreless. The Grizzlies would break the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning when Clint Freeman singled and Trevor Achenbach doubled before a wild pitch by Aufderheide made the score 1-0.

But after a scoreless sixth inning, the seventh saw an avalanche of offense by the visiting Slammers, who came within one batter of batting around their order twice in scoring 11 times against three different Grizzlies pitchers, 10 of which came on a trio of home runs, to put the game out of reach

The Grizzlies would get two runs in the bottom of the ninth when Achenbach launched a two-run home run off reliever Chris Roycroft, but it was not enough as the Grizzlies dropped the series at home.

Isaac Benard led the way offensively for Gateway, tying his career-high in hits in going 4-for-4 to extend his hit streak to seven games in a row. Clint Freeman also went 2-for-4 with a double in the loss.

The Grizzlies will try to avoid the sweep and wrap up their series with the Slammers on Sunday afternoon, June 19, at 1:05 p.m. at GCS Credit Union Ballpark. Steven Ridings will get the start on the mound for Gateway against Cole Cook for Joliet.
