Gateway Grizzlies News Release

Sauget, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies came back from an early 3-0 deficit, but gave up a two-out, go-ahead home run in the sixth inning and despite getting the tying run to the plate in their last three turns at bat, they could not come back in suffering a 5-3 loss to the Lake Erie Crushers on Wednesday night at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

After a scoreless first inning, the Crushers would hit three solo home runs off of Jason Rackers in the top of the second inning, with Sean Cheely, Austin White, and London Green combining to give Lake Erie a 3-0 advantage.

The Grizzlies got on the scoreboard one inning later in the bottom of the third when Andrew Penner crushed a solo home run to right field, his second home run in as many games, to make it a 3-1 ballgame. In the very next inning, Trevor Achenbach and Kevin Krause then hit back-to-back solo home runs on back-to-back pitches against Crushers starter Joseph Sgambelluri (7-5) to tie the game at 3-3.

But after a scoreless fifth inning, the Crushers went back to work in the top of the sixth against J.P. Williams (2-7) in his fourth inning of relief. Austin White reached on a two-out single, and two pitches later, Bryan De La Rosa hit a two-run home run, his first of the season, to take the lead back for Lake Erie at 5-3. Both bullpens kept the 5-3 score into the bottom of the ninth where the Grizzlies brought the winning run to the plate on a walk and hit batter with two outs, but Penner hit into a fielder's choice to end the game.

The Gateway Grizzlies will look to take the critical rubber game of the series on Thursday night, August 11, at 6:45 p.m. at GCS Credit Union Ballpark, with Manuel Rodriguez starting on the mound for Gateway.
