Grizzlies Fall to Miners

SAUGET, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners snapped a five-game losing streak behind the dominant left arm of Gunnar Kines with a 12-0 victory over the Gateway Grizzlies at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

Southern Illinois (32-30) started things early with a two-out solo home run in the top of the first inning. Luke Mangieri added a solo homer of his own in the top of the third to make it 2-0 Southern Illinois.

Jared Meng added an RBI double in the top of the fourth inning pushing Southern Illinois' lead to 3-0. Arturo Nieto immediately put two more on the board with a two-RBI double.

Yeltsin Gudino led the top of the fifth off with a double. The Miners were able to manufacture a run with Sandoval's sacrifice fly RBI, giving the Miners a 6-0 lead.

Gateway starter Matt Mulhearn took the loss, going six innings and allowing eight runs on 10 hits.

Gunnar Kines picked up the win striking out a season-high 12 batters surpassing his previous season-high of 11, also set against the Grizzlies. Kines pitched seven scoreless innings, allowed two walks, and carried a no-hitter into the seventh. Abdiel Diaz broke up Kines' no-hit bid with a lead-off single in the seventh.

The Miners would add two more runs in the top of the sixth inning with a Jarrod Watkins two-run home run, his first professionally, to make the score 8-0 Southern Illinois.

Luke Mangieri hit his second home run of the game in the eighth giving the Miners a 12-0.

The Grizzlies loss snaps a three-game winning streak and Gateway will get one more chance for the series win in a rubber match Thursday night at 6:45 p.m. CDT for first pitch in Sauget.
