Grizzlies Drop Last Game Of Homestand In Extra Innings

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno Grizzlies (41-43) split a four-game series against the Salt Lake Bees (34-50) after an exasperating extra inning loss. The Bees batted around in the 10th to put across six runs on way to a 9-3 victory in front of 5,970 fans Sunday night. Fresno is 3-5 in extra-inning games this season.

Six straight Salt Lake batters reached base in the decisive 10th inning. It began with pinch-hitter Taylor Lindsey leading off the 10th with a go-ahead homer off reliever Mason Tobin (L; 1 ER/1.0 IP) that struck the top half of the centerfield batters' eye. The Grizzlies replaced Tobin with Dan Runzler, but it didn't stop the Bees from adding runs. They added five runs on four hits off the lefty, including a RBI triple by J.B. Shuck and run-scoring single's by Efren Navarro and Roberto Lopez.

Prior to the 10th inning rally by Salt Lake, the game had remained frozen at three since the fourth inning. Back-to-back doubles by Travis Ishikawa and Chris Dominguez in the bottom of the fourth knotted the game at three, but they'd be unable to score the rest of the way despite putting a base runner on in every inning from the fifth-10th. The RBI by Dominguez was his 46 th on the season, which is the most by any current active Fresno player this season.

San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt, on rehab assignment for a broken left thumb, made his first appearance in the field during his rehab travels and was able to knock a homer out to right field in the third to tie the game at two. He went 1-4 on the night before exiting the game at the end of the seventh. Over four rehab games between High-A San Jose and Fresno, he is 7-14 (.500) with two doubles, two homers and three RBI.

Gary Brown gave the Grizzlies the lead right away in the first when he launched a leadoff home run (6) off starter Caleb Clay (ND; 3 ER/9.0 IP). It marks his 9th career leadoff homer in his minor-league career.

The Bees captured a one-run lead in the second after recording two RBI doubles in response to the Brown homer. The first came on a line drive to right field by John Hester, while the second came off the bat of Vance Albitz who split his liner between Gary Brown and a diving Travis Ishikawa.

The Belt homer tied it back at three in the third, but the Bees broke it right away in the fourth with an RBI single by Hester that scored Tommy Field, who had reached on a double.

Edwin Escobar (ND; 3 ER/7.0 IP) received his team-leading seventh no decision after pitching his fourth game of 7.0 or more innings. The lefty struck out five, but allowed six hits, and surrendered three runs (all in the first four frames). He managed to keep the Bees scoreless through the rest of his outing as he exited for reliever Erik Cordier (1.0 IP, 2 K) in the eighth.

The Fresno Grizzlies will bus out tomorrow morning and move north up the 99 to take on the Sacramento River Cats in a four-game series at Raley Field. The team will return home on Friday, July 4th to take on the rival Tacoma Rainiers in a four-game series that will begin the first stretch of an eight-game homestand.
