Gateway Grizzlies News Release
Sauget, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies almost came back from a 5-1 deficit in the seventh inning on Thursday night against the Lake Erie Crushers, but lost the critical rubber game and the series by a score of 5-4 at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
Lake Erie wasted no time getting the early lead in the top of the first inning after former Grizzlie Connor Owings led off the ballgame with a triple and later scored on a passed ball to make it 1-0. In the next inning, the Crushers' Austin White reached on a dropped third strike and two batters later scored on an RBI double by Bryan De La Rosa to extend the score to 2-0. After a scoreless third inning, Lake Erie added one more run on a solo home run by Owings to make it 3-0.
Manuel Rodriguez (0-1) held the line there, completing six innings of work on the mound and keeping Gateway within striking distance. The Grizzlies offense had just two hits, however, until the bottom of the fifth inning, when with one out, Jay Prather mashed a solo home run to right field to put the Grizzlies on the board and make the score 3-1.
Two innings later in the top of the seventh, though, the Crushers hit four-straight singles with one out resulting in two more runs to expand Lake Erie's lead to 5-1. In the bottom of the frame, the Grizzlies responded, as with one out, Prather hit a single and Abdiel Diaz reached on a fielding error by Lake Erie first baseman Jackson Valera. Andrew Penner then launched a three-run home run to left field, going deep for the third straight contest, to bring the Grizzlies within one run at 5-4.
That was as close as the Grizzlies got, however, dropping the series at home after winning the opener on Tuesday, and falling back into a tie with Lake Erie in the West Division standings.
The Gateway Grizzlies will look to bounce back when they welcome the first-place Washington Wild Things for three games beginning on Friday night, August 12, at 6:45 p.m. at GCS Credit Union Ballpark. Brendan Feldmann will start on the mound for Gateway against Stephen Knapp for Washington.
