The Fairbanks Grizzlies are proud to announce the signing of Shawn Melland from the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND. The 6'5 255 former outside linebacker from Watford City, ND was a standout performer for the Marauders and was a Two-Time, 1st Team All Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference performer. Shawn entered his senior year as the NSIC North Division Pre Season Defensive Player of the Year after a stellar junior season which saw him lead the conference in interceptions. Shawn ranks among the career leaders for the Marauders in tackles, interceptions, and tackles for loss. After his senior year Melland was selected to the East Coast All Star game and served as the North Team Captain. The San Francisco 49ers flew Melland out for a workout in which he posted a 4.58 40 time with a 40" vertical.
"Shawn is a special football player and has a very rare combination of speed and power. He is obviously a very gifted athlete but his work ethic is what sets him apart from everyone else. The 49ers want to see him rush the passer and we are more than happy to oblige" states newly named head coach Robert Fuller.
