Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Robstown - Kevin Griffin hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth as the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings beat the Coastal Bend Thunder 2-1 on Tuesday at Harlingen Field.

With one out in the ninth against Jared Sutton (0-1), Jose Sanchez reached on an error, Jose Fulgencio singled and Javis Diaz walked to set-up Griffin's first pitch walk-off.

That made a winner of Freddy Ballestas (3-0), who worked out of a bases loaded one out jam in the ninth with a strikeout and a pop-out.

WhiteWings (7-6) starting pitcher Misael DeJesus allowed one hit through the first seven innings and three hits overall in seven and one-third innings while striking out six in the longest outing by a WhiteWings starter this season.

The Thunder (6-7) got on the board for the first time in the eighth. With one out, Ron Fenwick singled and Mike Lewis walked. Dustin Smith tied the game with an RBI-single. Smith moved to second on the throw, prompting an intention walk of Mike Goss to load the bases. Andres Rosales got Leivi Ventura to ground into a fielder's choice on which the out was recorded at home

The WhiteWings got on the board in the bottom of the fourth against Frank James Jr. when Arlon Quiroz led off with a bunt-single, moved to third on a single by Kevin Dietrich and scored when Sanchez grounded into a fielder's choice to make it 1-0.

The WhiteWings and Thunder play game four of this eight-game series on Guaranteed Win Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:05. Right-hander Stephen Whalen (0-1) is expected to face right-hander Ryan Foss (0-1).
