Washington, Pa - Three runs in the top of the fifth helped lead the Frontier Greys to a 5-2 victory, over the first place Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, on Tuesday at CONSOL Energy Park.

A two-run home run by designated hitter Blake Bergeron, and an RBI triple by centerfielder Tillman Pugh gave the Greys (7-9) a 4-2 lead they would not surrender.

Washington (10-6) received a fine pitching performance from starter Shawn Smith (1-1). Smith worked seven innings, allowing four runs on five hits; he struck out nine while walking two. Two Wild Thing batters had multi-hit games in catcher Jim Vahalik, 3-for-4 with an RBI double, and left fielder Nick Akins, 2-4 with an RBI.

In the bottom of the second, the Wild Things plated the first two runs of the game off Frontier Greys starter Joe Zeller (2-2). Runners were on the corners for newly signed Akins, who connected for a single for his fourth RBI in his brief Wild Things career, this scored designated hitter Mark Samuelson. Akins touched home when catcher Jim Vahalik hit an RBI Double on the right field line, for his third RBI of 2013, and making it 2-0.

The traveling Frontier Greys scored a run of their own in the top of the third inning. With two outs and a runner on second, right fielder Mike Gallic hit a blooper near the right field line that right fielder Gus Bensua could not come up with a diving catch for. Gallic's triple scored shortstop Brock McCallister to cut the lead 2-1.

After a lead-off walk in the top of the fifth, Bergeron took the first Smith pitch he saw over the right field wall for his second home run of the year, and provided the Greys with their first day lead of the day, 3-2. Three batters later, with two outs, Gallic would reach on base via a double, and Pugh would knock in Gallic with a triple of his own, increasing the Frontier Greys' lead to two.

It seemed like the Greys were ready to add more insurance runs in the top of the sixth. They had runners on second and third with one out, Smith was able to strike out Bergeron and catcher Chris Kay, ending the inning and keeping it a 4-2 game.

Will Scott came in and relieved Smith in the top of the eighth. He allowed a solo homer to the first batter he faced, first baseman Balbino Fuenmayor, his first, making it 5-2.

The Wild Things and Frontier Greys play game two of this series on Wednesday at CONSOL Energy Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and tickets can be purchased online at www.washingtonwildthings.com or by stopping at the CONSOL Energy Park Box Office.
