Erie Otters News Release
A line brawl and an old-fashioned goalie fight in the first period set the tone for a physical game Saturday night, as the Erie Otters lost to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, 5-1, in front of 3,602 fans at Tullio Arena.
Greg McKegg and Dan Catenacci swapped hits near the Soo penalty box at the 15:16 mark of the first, leading to a scrum between all position players on the ice. When things started to settle down, Otters goaltender Ramis Sadikov took on Soo netminder Robin Lehner in an entertaining fight, leading to ejections for both players.
The Greyhounds took advantage of the Sadikov ejection, burning Shane Owen for two goals on the first three shots he faced. T.J. Battani scored a shorthanded goal 16 seconds after play resumed and Jake Carrick added a tally with 1:03 left in the first period.
Soo controlled the action for the rest of the night, picking up a second period to expand their lead to three. Brett Cook broke up the shutout for the Otters late in the third period with a power play goal, but the Greyhounds fired back with two late goals to win by the score of 5-1 and snap their six-game winless streak.
Bryce O'Hagan preformed brilliantly in relief of Lehner, making 22 saves to stifle the Otters. Derek Holden picked up his first point as an Otter with an assist on the Cook goal.
The Otters homestand continues Wednesday for Hockey for the Hungry/Buck Night at 7:00 p.m. against the Guelph Storm. Fans who bring a non-perishable food item to the Otters office, Hungry Howie's Pizza or Chiropractic Fitness and receive a free ticket to that game. It's also Buck Night with dollar hot dogs, popcorn and beverages! For more information on Hockey for the Hungry, visit ottershockey.com.
