Calgary Vipers News Release

Thanks to a fantastic start by ace Evan Greusel the Calgary Vipers defeated the Edmonton Cracker-Cats 8-3 in front of 1989 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Greusel threw seven innings and gave up no earned runs on only four hits while walking nobody and striking out four. The Snakes bats were also hot delivering 13 hits for eight runs.

Darryl Brinkley leadoff the bottom of the first inning with a single to center field and he promptly stole second base. Nelson Castro reached on a throwing error to move Brinkley to third base and Drew Miller drove him in with a sacrifice fly to left field. Jose Morban and Patrick Arlis both followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to give Calgary the 3-0 lead.

A run was added in the bottom of the second inning with a leadoff walk to Travis Drader and a RBI double from Castro.

In the bottom of the fourth Miller walked, Morban doubled, and Arlis singled to load the bases. Making his debut Felix Jose knocked in two runs with a single to give the Vipers a 6-0 advantage. Jose in his debut with the Snakes ended up three-for-four with two runs batted in and a walk.

With two outs in the fifth inning Castro singled and Miller banged his second homerun of the season to dead centerfield for the 8-0 score.

Edmonton's Carlos Arroyo led off the top of the seventh and reached on a fielding error, Joe Jiannetti followed with a single, and Chris Van Rossum hit into a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners with one out. Josh Carter followed with a groundball to shortstop that was dropped at second base for an error allowing Arroyo to score the Cracker-Cats first run. With Van Rossum now at third base Jordan Lundberg hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 8-2 with both runs being unearned.

The Cracker-Cats added a run in the top of the ninth with a Jiannetti infield single and after he moved to second base on defensive indifference he scored on a Carter RBI single to cut the lead to 8-3.

Greusel (1-0) took the win while Edmonton starter Augustine Montero (0-1) was saddled with the loss. Ryan Olson threw two innings out of the bullpen to close out the game for Calgary giving up one run but not walking a batter and striking out three.
