Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers and the Golden Baseball League announced today that RHP Evan Greusel has been named Safeway Pitcher of the Week for his performance during the first week of the 2008 Golden Baseball League season.

Greusel, 28, 6-3, 220 lbs is a right-handed pitcher who was drafted out of the University of Oklahoma in the 17th round of the 2002 draft by the Florida Marlins. After three years in Florida's minor league organization he was released and immediately signed by the Calgary Vipers in their inaugural season in 2005. He has gone on to become the winningest pitcher in Viper history as he compiled a record of 24-10 for Calgary prior to this year.

In the first week of this season, Greusel posted a record of 1-0 in two starts while throwing 12.1 innings and giving up only two earned runs for a 1.46 E.R.A which is second best in the Golden Baseball League. The Las Vegas, Nevada resident struck out nine, did not walk a single batter, and gave up a stingy .250 batting average against. Greusel is also the pitching coach of the Vipers and helped lead the Snakes to the top of the GBL North Division standings.

Back in July of 2006 Greusel was Pitcher of the Week twice and Pitcher of the Month in the Northern League. In July of 2005 the player who tossed the first pitch in Vipers history also received Pitcher of the Week in the Northern League. The two-time Northern League all-star was Pitcher of the Month for May of 2003 in the Florida Marlins organization.

The Vipers now head out on their inaugural road trip south of the border to play the St. George RoadRunners starting Tuesday night at 7:05 PM (MDT) with Pitcher of the Week Evan Greusel (1-0) making the start. Wednesday and Thursday at 7:05 PM (MDT) the two teams will also play with Nate Melek (0-0) and Reggie Rivard (0-0) toeing the rubber for Calgary. Friday and Saturday the Snakes take on the Yuma Scorpions at 8:00 PM (MDT) with Dallas Mahan (2-0) and Jordy Alexander (1-1) starting on the mound. Sunday at 7:00 PM (MDT) the three game series will wrap up with Evan Greusel (1-0) once again starting. All games can be heard live online at www.calgaryvipers.com.

Two teams never before seen in Calgary will then head in for the next home stand. The St. George Roadrunners with former Chicago White Sox infielder Liu Rodriguez will be here June 11, 12 and 13. Then the defending champion Chico Outlaws hit town. Friday, June 13th it's an afternoon "Skip out of Work" special so fans can watch both the Vipers and then the Stamps exhibition game. On Saturday June 14th it's Ripley's Believe It or Not Day at Foothills Stadium. A full contingent from the famous tourist attraction will be in Calgary to take possession of the 10 bats acquired in the Odom trade and to present the check to the Vipers Children's Charity. On Sunday, June 15th it's the Vipers Father's Day Extravaganza. Hall of Famer Gary Carter will be the Vipers special guest to throw out the first pitch and sign autographs. The Calgary Minor Softball Association will be holding their Opening ceremonies following the game and will be out in full force. The Vipers will be teaming with PharmaChoice Drug Stores and the Calgary Prostate Society to raise awareness for prostate cancer treatments.
