Greg Spenrath Returns as Head Coach
June 22, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
Fresno, Calif. â Greg Spenrath will return as the head coach of the Fresno Falcons for the 2004-05 season after taking over the team's coaching duties 25 games into last season. Spenrath succeeded current general manager Blaine Moore as the fourth head coach in team history on Dec. 15, 2003, after Moore stepped down from behind the bench.
The only individual associated with the Falcons since the organization's inception as a professional team in 1995-96, last season Spenrath guided the club to a 15-28-4 record and sixth place (out of seven) finish in the ECHL's Pacific Division.
"Unlike last season when there wasn't much time to prepare for the job and both myself and the players were dealing with a lot of changes in a short amount of time, this year right from training camp I'll be in control and fully prepared to lead this team," said Spenrath. "I'm starting with a clean slate and know what needs to be done to get the Falcons back into the playoffs and in position to challenge for the Kelly Cup."
"Last year Greg took the coaching job under less than ideal circumstances," said Moore. "This is an organization that has always promoted from within, and Greg deserves another opportunity. He is very capable and with a fresh start from the beginning of the season I'm confident he'll be successful."
Spenrath began his coaching career as an assistant under Moore in 2002-03 after spending parts of eight seasons as a Falcons player, five as the team' s captain. The Edmonton, AB, native finished his playing career as the organization's all-time leader in penalty minutes (1,745) and games played (361, but has since been passed by Mike Mathers, who has 379 games played). The team retired his #27 Falcons sweater in 2002.
Spenrath makes his permanent home in Fresno with his wife, Audrey, and daughter, Riley.
The Falcons look to make a return trip to the playoffs under Spenrath in the ECHL's West Division when the 2004-05 campaign gets underway at Save Mart Center on Oct. 22 against the Las Vegas Wranglers. Full season ticket packages and Flex Packs are already on sale beginning as low as $42.
