Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. (April 3, 2013) - The Pensacola Ice Flyers have announced today that Greg Harris, previously the team's minority owner and alternate governor, is now the majority owner and managing member of Pensacola's professional hockey team.
"I am extremely excited to be fulfilling one of my earliest ambitions," Harris commented. "It's an honorto be a steward of the Ice Flyers' present and future and to lead the organization to further success on the ice, off the ice and in the community. It's a responsibility and distinction that I take very seriously."
Harris purchased additional shares from Tim Kerr, who formerly headed the team but will continue to maintain a position and involvement from within the ownership group.
Harris, having relocated from Edmonton, Alberta in Canada two years ago, is wrapping up his second season helping Kerr manage the team locally from the Ice Flyers' office located at the Pensacola Bay Center.
"Tim has laid a solid foundation on which I plan to build. I thank him for the guidance he's given me to be able to continue the success and viability of the Ice Flyers in Pensacola and I look forward to becoming further involved with this amazing community," Harris commented. "It's also very important to me that we continue to build a professional hockey team that this community can take tremendous pride in for many seasons to come."
With a goal of building a locally owned team, Harris approached a couple local businessmen to join the Ice Flyers' ownership group. Subsequently, David J. Maloney of Maloney-Frost, LLP and Dr. Stuart Harlin of Coastal Vascular & Interventional, PLLC and Stand Up Open MRI of Pensacola, LLC have joined as minority partners.
"I felt it was important to make the Ice Flyers locally owned," Harris said. "However, I didn't want just any investor. I wanted a local investor that has a connection to and passion for the organization and the players. Both David and Stuart have been long-time season ticket holders and supporters, which is why I chose to ask them."
The Ice Flyers plan to hold a town hall meeting hosted by Harris following the completion of the season, as the team is about to begin the semifinal round of playoffs against the Knoxville Ice Bears, and looks to play for the SPHL President's Cup for the second straight year.
"We're having a great season off and on the ice. Our attendance and corporate numbers are up, and we're in the hunt for a championship," Harris stated. "Head coach Gary Graham and I have been working closely all season, and it is our plan to foster the organization into the most sought after place to play professional hockey. The ultimate goal is to bring championships to Pensacola."
