The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club settled for a 1-1 draw against Central Valley Fuego FC on Saturday night at the California club's inaugural home opener in Fresno. The Triumph rallied from a 0-1 deficit to earn their second draw on the season and push the club's record to 1-2-2.
A competitive dual broke out for Fuego FC's home opener, with the Triumph looking to avenge 2-0 loss to Fuego in the season opener. Greenville and Fuego both attacked early, creating a number of opportunities that challenged each other's defenses. Greenville's Allen Gavilanes and Jesus Ibarra were able to attack into space, putting pressure on Fuego's backline and getting some shots off early in the half. Both sides held each other scoreless until the final minutes of extra time, when Fuego FC crossed the ball in for a scoring header that gave them the advantage seconds before the teams left for the locker rooms.
The second half began with Greenville holding momentum, and they were soon able to capitalize. Eight minutes into the half, Greenville got its opportunity, tying up the match 1-1 off a Don Smart corner kick that trapped Fresno's defenders in front of goal. Pressure from Aaron Walker led to a Fresno defender deflecting the corner into his net for an own goal. Players challenged each other physically as the match progressed, with Fuego FC tallying five yellow cards and Greenville tallying two by the end of the match. Greenville continued to move the ball around Fuego's half searching for the winning goal. However, at the end of 90 minutes and stoppage, the teams ended the night deadlocked 1-1.
For Greenville, the draw was the second in two road matches on the season. Triumph SC will host Forward Madison next Friday, May 13th, at 7:00 pm in Triumph Stadium at Legacy Early College.
