Greenville-Asheville Mayors Issue Challenge for Playoff Series

September 9, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release

GREENVILLE (SC) Beginning tonight, the Greenville Drive and the Asheville Tourists will represent not only their respective cities but their home states in what is being billed as the Battle of the Carolinas when they face off in Game 1 of the Southern Division Championship series at McCormick Field in Asheville. This is the first time since 1997 that a professional baseball team from Greenville has made the playoffs, so the stakes are already high for Greenville, but to up the ante, Greenville Mayor Knox White has issued a friendly challenge to Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy and she has accepted.

If the Tourists win the playoffs, Mayor White has agreed to donate 20 tickets to downtown Greenville's recently-opened Children's Museum of the Upstate, and if the Drive win the playoffs, Mayor Bellamy has agreed to donate 20 tickets to Asheville's historic Biltmore Estate. With either outcome, the tickets will then be donated for use by disadvantaged youth in the winning city.

"In addition to the excitement of being in the playoffs, I think it's great that we're playing our neighbors to the north and fans of both teams can easily attend the games to cheer for their teams," said Mayor White. "I thought it would be fun if Mayor Bellamy and I capitalized on that friendly rivalry and also did something to give back to our respective communities in the process."
