Augusta GreenJackets News Release
AUGUSTA, GA: During an evening spent reflecting on the memories of fallen heroes of our great country, the Augusta GreenJackets (21-22) hosted game one of a three game series against the Greenville Drive (26-18). The Drive entered today's game three and a half games ahead of the GreenJackets in the Southern Division of the SAL League. Greenville jumped out to an early lead and held off the Augusta's attempts throughout the night to tie the game to take home a victory with a of score of five to three.
The GreenJackets tall left-handed pitcher Matt Gage (2-2 ERA 3.99) started the night on the mound. Gage who was coming off of a no decision effort against the Savannah Sand Gnats on May 19th was determined to collect his third victory of the season Monday night. But, the first inning did not go as planned for Gage or the GreenJackets. With runners on first and second bases, the Drive's catcher Jordan Procyshen singled to left field to knock in lead off man Mauricio Dubon from second base. After a double steal by Derek Miller and Procyshen, GreenJackets third baseman Jonah Arenado misjudged a ball hit to him to allow Miller to score the Drive's second run. With Procyshen on third base and only one out the Drive were not finished with building their lead in the first inning. Mike Meyers hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Proscyhen for the Drives third and final run of the inning.
With a three run deficit the GreenJackets batters dug deep into the batter's box and were determined to hit their way back into the game. Johneshwy Fargas was able to start the GreenJackets off in the right direction with a line drive single to right field. An out later, Fargas moved up to second base when a single was hit off the bat of shortstop Jeremy Sy. With two runners on and one out, Jonah Arenado added another RBI to his resume with a single to left field to score Fargas. The RBI was Arenado's twenty-sixth of the year and it also made the score three to one after just one inning of play at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The Drive were able to extend their lead back to three runs in the top of the second inning when Mauricio Dubon singled home Joseph Monge. Then for a few innings both the Drive and the GreenJackets bats cooled down. Up until, the Drive struck again in the top fifth inning. The Drive led off the fifth with three straight singles by Derek Miller, Jordan Procyshen, and, Cisco Tellez to push their lead to five to one.
Trailing four runs the GreenJackets could have just laid down to the Southern Division leaders, but once again this scrappy team coached by manager Nestor Rojas did not go quietly into the night. In the top of the sixth inning with two outs Skyler Ewing chose the right time to hit his first triple of the year. With the GreenJackets gaining momentum, Cristian Paulino stepped up to the plate looking to bring Ewing home. Paulino ended up knocking Ewing and himself home when a Paulino hit a scorching line drive that went past right fielder Derek Miller.
As the ball made it's way to the fence, Paulino sped around the bases for an inside-the-park home run. The home run was Paulino's first of the year and brought the GreenJackets with in two runs of the Drive.
After six full innings and the lead Drive's starting pitcher Jalen Bleeks (4-1 ERA 3.63) handed the ball over to reliever Williams JerezWilliams pitched the final three frames without allowing the GreenJackets to get any closer to scoring than a runner reaching reaching second base in the bottom of the seventh inning. Leaving the GreenJackets to take the loss on Monday night's Memorial Day match up. The final score board line read three runs, eight hits, and one error for the Augusta GreenJackets and five runs, twelve hits, and two errors for the Green Drive. Starting pitchers Matt Gage will receive the loss and Jalen Beeks takes the win. Williams Jerez picks up his third save in the series for his efforts on the mound.
Tomorrow, May 26th game two's pitching match up features LHP Mark Reyes (2-1 ERA 1.71) for the GreenJackets and the Drive will counter with RHP Jeffry Ferandez (0-4 ERA 4.50). Game time is set for 7:05pm and the gates of Lake Olmstead Stadium will open at 6:00pm.
