Savannah, GA - The Asheville Tourists scored the final three runs on Memorial Day to defeat the Savannah Sand Gnats 5-3 Monday evening at Historic Grayson Stadium. Savannah third baseman Eudor Garcia was 2-for-4 in the loss with a triple, a run scored and two RBI.
The Tourists (19-25) scored twice in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. The first run came home on starter Corey Oswalt's throwing error. Asheville took the lead on RF Drew Weeks' sacrifice fly into foul territory in right field.
Asheville added an insurance run in the ninth against reliever Alberto Baldonado.
The Gnats (19-25) took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning against Asheville starter Zach Jemiola. Garcia's triple into the right field corner keyed the inning as it drove home DH JC Rodriguez and allowed Garcia to score on RF John Mora's sacrifice fly in the next at-bat.
Jemiola (6-3) survived six innings, allowing three runs on hits to earn the win.
Oswalt (3-1) was charged with his first loss of 2015 for allowing four runs, two earned, on 11 hits in his 6.1 innings.
The Sand Gnats and Asheville Tourist will continue their three-game series on Tuesday at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats will send LHP Brad Wieck (1-4, 3.41) to the hill, while Asheville will start LHP Helmis Rodriguez (3-1, 2.27). Tomorrow will be Catholic Diocese Night at the Ballpark.
