Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release

The "force" was definitely with Pensacola Blue Wahoos left fielder Brodie Greene on Wednesday at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.

Greene knocked in four runs wielding his bat as mightily as Darth Vader swings his light saber to lead Pensacola to a 7-2 victory over the Birmingham Barons in the first game of a five-game series.

Greene's heroics came during "Star Wars" night at the ballpark that featured Darth Vader throwing out the first pitch and R2-D2, Storm Troopers and other characters patrolling the stands and posing for photos with fans. Young attendees to the game received inflatable light sabers from the Wahoos and dozens of Star Wars fans young and old dressed as their favorite characters to watch the game.

Pensacola got on the scoreboard first in the fifth inning when Greene hit a deep sacrifice fly ball to right field that scored Juan Duran, who led off the inning with a double over the centerfielder's head. Two more runs scored on a walk to Devin Lohman, a double down the right field line by Rey Navarro and another double to right by Travis Mattair, who has a six-game hitting streak.

In the next inning with the bases loaded, Greene cleared the bases, hitting a sizzling groundball into the left field corner for a triple that gave Pensacola a, 7-1, lead. He also scored a run.

"Each at bat I'm feeling better and better," Greene said. "I'm trying to take advantage of my opportunities."

Birmingham scored in the sixth inning on a home run by Trace Thompson. It was the only run given up by Pensacola's starting pitcher, Daniel Corcino, who struck out the first Barons' batter in four of the first five innings and had six strikeouts total.

Pensacola manager Delaino DeShields liked Corcino's performance Wednesday, after giving up six runs in 1 2/3 innings in his last outing.

"It was a solid game for Corcino," he said. "He had a rough outing the last time but was back tonight."

Notes: The series continues tomorrow with the second game of the five-game set. RHP Robert Stephenson (2-4, 3.74) will take the mound for the Blue Wahoos against Barons RHP Chris Beck (2-6, 4.35). It's a Seville Quarter Thirsty Thursday with additional drink specials as part of the Wahoo Waddle.

The West Florida High School girls' softball team received loud cheers during a pre-game celebration and again at the beginning of the third inning for winning the Class 4A state championship, the school's first ever. The Jaguars, who won 29 of their 30 games and are coached by Jessica Smith, defeated P.K. Yonge from Gainesville, Fla., by scoring five runs in their last at-bat. Senior star pitcher Korina Rosario, who has signed with Florida State, laughed when asked if she would pitch for the Blue Wahoos one day. "But who knows, right - she said.

The winners of the Darth Vader costume contest held during the sixth inning were: First Place - Lee Grogan, 10, dressed as Darth Maul complete with a homemade mask. Second Place - Chloe Grogan, 8, who came as Princess Leia in a white dress and hair pinned in two buns on top of her head; Third Place - Jubilee Lampron, 5, who was in full regalia as Darth Vada; and Honorable Mention - Keegan Warren, 7, who was Darth Vader.

Little and big kids alike may want to consider entering for a role in the Star Wars Episode VII, which recently started production and is scheduled to hit movie theaters in December 2016. The film announced Wednesday they are creating a walk-on role for a member of the general public to raise money to support UNICEF's Innovation Labs, which aims to create technological fixes for children in remote or troubled regions. For each $10 contribution, donors will be automatically entered into the contest that runs until midnight on July 18.
