Great Falls Voyagers News Release
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (August 18, 2014) - The Great Falls Voyagers fell in to an early hole, and were unable to climb out of it as the Grand Junction Rockies won their third straight in the series 5-3 Monday night at Suplizio Field.
For the first time in the series, the Rockies (14-7, 37-22) plated the contest's first runs. Wes Rogers got things started for Grand Junction, bringing in the first two runs with a third inning double. Forrest Wall then followed with an RBI single, and Kevin Padlo completed the four-run frame with a sacrifice fly.
Great Falls (8-14, 31-29) got one run back in the next half inning, manufacturing a two-out tally. Dillon Haupt doubled off reliever Anthony Bryant (3-0), Louie Lechich followed with a single to advance Haupt to third, who then scored on a passed ball.
The score stayed the same until the sixth, when the Voyagers cut the lead to one. With the bases full, Ryan Jones and John Ziznewski drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to make it 4-3, but left the bases loaded, unable to tie it up or take the lead.
Grand Junction added an insurance run in the eighth as Nate Causey took David Trexler deep, for his fourth homer of the year and second in as many days.
In the ninth, Great Falls was able to bring the tying run to the plate, but Taylor Black slammed the door for the Rockies to earn his third save.
Brian Clark (2-4) had just the one rough inning on the night, offering up three scoreless surrounding that four-run third. The southpaw struck out seven Rockies in those four innings of work, setting a new career-high.
The Voyager loss is their third straight, the third time this season they have lost three in a row on the road in 2014, which ties their season-high. It also sends them to 3-4 on their seven-game road trip, and 1-6 this season against Grand Junction.
After a day off on Tuesday, the Voyagers return to Centene Stadium to begin a two-game set with the Helena Brewers Wednesday night. Great Falls will turn to righty Zach Thompson (2-3, 3.51), while Helena will counter with left-hander Luis Ortega (3-6, 9.78). First pitch is set for 7:00 and coverage will begin at 6:45 on 1400 AM KXGF and gfvoyagers.com.
