Great Falls Voyagers News Release
GREAT FALLS, Mont. (August 17, 2015)Â - The Great Falls Voyagers allowed a pair of three-run frames, and dropped the opener of their four-game series against the Grand Junction Rockies 6-3 Monday night at Centene Stadium.
The Rockies (5-12, 25-30) got off to a hot start, as Wes Rogers started the game with a double off of Voyager starter Matt Ball (2-5). Two batters later, Grand Junction opened the scoring on a Collin Ferguson single. The next two also reached, loading the bases for Daniel Suero, who drove in two more with a base hit.
Great Falls (9-8, 26-27) plated their first run of the night in the third. With two down, Frank Califano tripled, then came around to score on a base hit by Antonio Rodriguez, who tied Zach Fish for the team lead with his 33rd RBI of the campaign.
In the fourth, the Voyagers closed the gap to one, as Dante Flores started the frame with a double, scoring later in the inning on a wild pitch.
Grand Junction answered however, pushing across three for the second time in the fifth. After a walk started the inning, the Rockies got three straight run scoring doubles from Chris Rabago, Jonathan Piron, and Bobby Stahel, pushing the visitors' lead to 6-2.
Michael Zimmerman exited after four for the Rockies, working a career-high four innings and striking out a career-high four before turning it over to Alec Crawford (1-0) and the Grand Junction bullpen.
The Voyagers pushed across one tally against the Rockies relievers, as Louis Silverio picked up his first RBI since returning to the Great Falls lineup with a fielder's choice in the sixth.
Outside of the sixth, Great Falls only had one other threat in the latter stages of the contest. The Voyagers loaded the bases with three singles in the eighth, but a popup and strikeout got Grand Junction out of the jam unscathed.
The Voyagers and Rockies continue their four-game set Tuesday night at Centene Stadium. Great Falls will turn to righty Brannon Easterling (4-2, 3.16), while Grand Junction will counter with a right-hander of their own, in Mike Nikorak (0-2, 11.00) First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and coverage will begin at 6:45 on 1400 AM KXGF and gfvoyagers.com.
