January 25, 2008 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Flint Generals News Release
FLINT, MI - The Flint Generals had an outstanding opening 20 minutes firing three goals in the first four minutes of play and ran off with a 5-1 triumph over the Fort Wayne Komets on Friday night at Perani Arena and Event Center.
The Generals won their 21st of the season and 12th on home ice. The victory also snapped the six game winning streak of the Komets and trimmed their first place lead to just seven points. Goaltender Eric Marvin was brilliant in net turning aside 32 or 33 shots.
The start of the game was electrifying for the Generals as they connected early and often. First Josef Fojtik notched his 20th of the season from John DiPace and Michael Beausoleil. Twenty-eight seconds later Flint added their second goal when Michael Beausoleil wired a slap shot past starter Kevin Reiter who was pulled early. Martin Ondrej and Josef Fojtik earned assists on the goal.
But the Generals were not done yet and this time it was Jared Dumba who notched a goal from Ondrej and Jonathan Duchesneau to make it 3-0.
The opening 20 minutes was also highlighted by two fights as first Kris Mallette and Brent Henley went toe-to-toe and then Ryan Jorde battled Olivier Legault.
The second period was dominated by the Generals early and they made it 4-0 when Jason Cirone scored on the power play from Shaun Fisher and Nick Tuzzolino. The Komets were given three five on three power plays late in the second period but failed to turn those into goals.
The Komets finally got on the board early in the third period but the Generals scored again when Darren McCarty, playing in his second last scheduled home game, scored from Mike Kinnie and Shaun Fisher.
The Generals were 2 for 3 on the power play while the Komets were 1 for 7. The Generals outshot the Komets 34-33 including 16-7 in the opening 20 minutes.
