Moncton Wildcats News Release

Moncton, NB - Reading was a struggle for grade four student Calvin Ross, he just wasn't interested. His teachers at Forest Glen school were concerned about his comprehension levels, Calvin was just not motivated.

In came the Moncton Wildcats, to the Forest Glen School auditorium on February 1st to launch the annual reading challenge sponsored by the Wildcats, the Times&Transcript and RBC. The 150 students gave Brandon Gormley, Simon Jodin, Andrew Roski and Kerill Kabanov, a rousing fan welcome. There were high fives all over the auditorium, coupled with roars of applause as play-by-play announcer Les Stoodley brought each of the players out to meet the students.

Calvin Ross was wide eyed with excitement and very impressed as the Wildcats, in their game jerseys, answered questions from the students. The enthusiasm of the day stirred something in Calvin. He decided he was going to respond to the challenge of his Wildcats role models and start reading books. Once he started, Calvin just had to finish the book. His teachers noticed an outstanding increase in his level of comprehension as well.

Five days later, school principal Karen Nelson was delighted to announce because of the number of books read that week, Calvin, along with school mates Cameron Murphy, Isaac Williams, Lancelot Salam and Nico LeBlanc had won tickets to see the Wildcats play on February 6th against the Saint John Sea Dogs. Mrs. Nelson was so excited with the turn around in Calvin's attitude about reading, she had to send a message to Megan Kay, the Wildcats Director of Sales and coordinator of the Reading is Wild program, about the positive turn of events in Calvin Ross's young life.

For the Wildcats, it was another indication of the power of example presented by their players. They had motivated Calvin Ross to read. Hundreds of other students in Forest Glen, Dorchester Elementary, West Riverview and Beaverbrook schools will have the same experience in the next month of the Reading is Wild program.
