HOUSTON, TEXAS - Gotham FC and the Houston Dash played to a hard-fought 1-1 draw on Sunday night at Shell Energy Stadium. After a first-half goal scored by Houston forward María Sánchez, Gotham FC forward Lynn Williams finished her first-ever Gotham FC penalty kick goal to net the equalizer in the second half.

Both teams battled for chances in the early going, and at the time of the first hydration break at the 30-minute mark, Gotham FC held a 2-1 advantage in shots and a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Five minutes later, Gotham FC captain Ali Krieger went down with an injury. As a precaution the center back was subbed out and replaced by defender Ellie Jean.

The Houston Dash opened the scoring, when forward Michelle Alozie dribbled down the right flank and sent a low, driven ball across the box, which midfielder María Sánchez redirected into the far side netting in the 36th minute for the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Coming out of the halftime break, the visitors came back to even the scoreline in the 53rd minute. Gotham FC defender and recently named NWSL Rookie of the Month Jenna Nighswonger sent a cross into the box that Lynn Williams connected on for a shot that hit the post. The rebound landed at the feet of midfielder Kristie Mewis, who was taken down in the penalty area. Williams put away the penalty - her first with Gotham FC - to tie the game 1-1.

In the 61st minute, a chance for Houston to take the lead was overturned after the VAR recommended a video review of a Dash goal. The referee went to the monitor and reviewed the available video angles to confirm that the ball had gone out of bounds in the build up to the score, and the Houston Dash goal was disallowed.

Gotham FC comes away with a point in the first of two consecutive road matches. The club still ranks among the top five in the league standings ahead of next weekend's match at Racing Louisville on Sunday, June 18.
