Gorillas sign new face in Mike Corneau

August 4, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL) - Amarillo Gorillas News Release

AMARILLO, TX – The Amarillo Gorillas of the Central Hockey League have added a fresh face to their roster for the 2004-2005 season with the signing of forward Mike Corneau.

Corneau was a member of the Port Huron Beacons of the United Hockey League this past season where he helped the club to advance to the semi-finals before falling in six games to the Elmira Jackals. In 76 games with the Beacons, Corneau had seven goals and 25 assists for 32 points and 51 penalty minutes.

“I am looking forward to my first visit to Texas,” said Corneau about coming to Amarillo. “I have heard a lot of positive things about Amarillo, and I think I can help the team in a variety of ways such as their penalty kill, power play and help in the face-offs.”

Corneau, a native of the Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, is a product of the Canadian Universty Hockey system where he played for three years at the University of Ottawa. The 6-1, 212-pound left winger and centerman, played in 60 games with the Gee-Gees where he accumulated 17 goals and added 22 assists for 39 points and 66 penalty minutes.

“Mike will be a huge addition to the hockey club especially on our specialty teams,” said Gorillas Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations and Assistant General Manager Joe Ferras. “He’s a big and strong centerman who should be a great compliment to Derek Hahn. Mike was one of the top face-off men in the United Hockey League last year.”

Corneau was a teammate of recently signed Amarillo Gorillas tough guy Ken Fels in Port Huron. Corneau said he is happy to rejoin his teammate Fels and is looking forward to play in the Central Hockey League.

“I have heard a lot of great things about the league and I am excited to make a contribution,” Corneau said.

“He is a great character guy who has a physical element in his game that will be a great addition to the Gorillas,” said Ferras. ”Mike is a player that a coach loves to have on his team because he comes to the rink every day and takes pride in his job.”

Mike Corneau is the eighth player signed by the Amarillo Gorillas for the 2004-2005 season joining teammates Ken Fels, Mark DeSantis, Derek Hahn, Tyler Butler, Darren Curry, Bill Cass and Ryan Shannon.

The 2004-2005 season for the Amarillo Gorillas is fast approaching with the home opener set for Friday, October 22 at 7 p.m. when they host the Odessa Jackalopes. Hockey fans shouldn’t delay in purchasing their Season Tickets as full as well as 10 and 15 game mini-plans are available by either dropping by the Gorillas Hockey Office at 1934 Civic Circle or call 242-7825.
