Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX 10/28/08 - Despite the over-two-thousand enthusiastic children rooting them on, the Gorillas struggled in their first meeting with Odessa in 2008-09. The rival Jackalopes scored three goals in the final five minutes of the second period and three more in the third to pull away, 7-1, Tuesday afternoon.
The game began with Amarillo killing several early Odessa power plays. With under six minutes left to go in the first period, however, the Jackalopes scored on a scrum in front of Amarillo goaltender Ryan Scott to go up, 1-0, heading into the first intermission.
After five consecutive penalty kills, the Gorillas finally got on the board at the 6:30 mark of the second period. Stuart MacRae forced an Odessa defensive-zone turnover, as the loose puck came loose to Joe Guenther. Guenther skated down the left wing and placed a centering pass directly on the stick of Sam Ftorek, who proceeded to tip the puck past Jackalope netminder Alexandre Vincent. Ftorek's first goal of the season tied the game at one, where it would remain until late in the second period.
With just under five minutes left to go in the second frame, Phillipe Plante jammed in a Russ Moyer rebound to regain the lead for Odessa. Jonathan Labelle and Kory Karlander each scored within the next four minutes of playing time to extend the Jackalopes' lead to 4-1.
Gorillas Head Coach Tom Coolen pulled Scott in favor of Sebastian Jonsson to begin the third period. The change in net produced no change in result, as the Jackalopes' hard-charging forecheck netted three more goals on ten shots before the conclusion of the game.
Amarillo went 0-for-8 on the power play, while holding Odessa to 1-for-8 while on the man advantage. Despite the loss, the Gorillas managed their best home attendance for 2008-09 thus far.
